Things to Do in Houston with Kids: 20 Ideas Sorted by Age and Weather

Houston is quietly one of the best cities in the country for kids: a NASA visitor center, a top-ranked children's museum, a dinosaur hall that makes eight-year-olds go silent, and wild alligators an hour away. The hard part is the heat. This list flags what's indoors.

The big four (do these first)

Space Center Houston (ages 5+, indoor). Real rockets, the shuttle carrier you can walk through, and a tram into the actual Johnson Space Center. Book the earliest tram tour; the day only gets hotter and busier. Book tickets →.

Children's Museum Houston (ages 1 to 12, indoor). Regularly ranked the best in the US. The three-story climbing structure and the kid-run city keep them busy for four hours. Free Thursday evenings.

Houston Zoo (all ages, outdoor). Go at opening. The Galápagos exhibit and the sea lion show are the stars. Zoo Lights in winter is a must.

Outdoor (October to April, or early mornings)

• Kemah Boardwalk: rides and boat trips on the bay, 15 minutes from Space Center.
• Levy Park: the best under-8 playground in Houston, with a treehouse.
• Discovery Green: splash pad, playground, and a winter ice rink.
• Brazos Bend State Park: guaranteed alligator sightings from a safe trail, and an observatory on Saturday nights.
• Buffalo Bayou: the bat emergence at Waugh Bridge at dusk. Free, and a bigger hit than you'd expect.
• Armand Bayou Nature Center: pontoon boat tours and bison.

Rainy day or 100-degree day

• Downtown Aquarium: fish, white tigers, and a Ferris wheel. Touristy; kids don't care.
• The Galleria ice rink: skating in July.
• The Health Museum: walk-through organs, right in the Museum District.
• Topgolf, iFLY, and escape rooms: for tweens and teens.
• The Downtown Tunnels: a weekday adventure that's free.
• Houston Botanic Garden has shade and a children's garden; the winter Lightscape is spectacular.

By age

• Toddlers: Children's Museum (the Tot Spot), Levy Park, the zoo at opening, Hermann Park train.
