Free Museum Days in Houston: every free window, verified
Which Houston museums are free, on which day, at which hour — checked against each venue's own admission page. Plus what you pay the rest of the week.

Houston has an unusually good free-museum offer for a big American city, and almost nobody publishes it accurately. The listicles that rank for it are copied from each other, and the free windows move: they are sponsored, and sponsorships change.
So we checked. Every figure below was read off the venue's own admission page on September 11, 2026, and each row links to the exact page it came from. Where a venue does not publish a number, this page says so rather than filling the gap.
The headline: 4 of the 10 major attractions we checked are free every day they are open. 5 more have a recurring free window. Two days carry almost all of it — Tuesday and Thursday — and the single most valuable one is Thursday, when three separate Museum District institutions are free at overlapping hours.

What is free, by day of the week
Tuesday
- Houston Museum of Natural Science — 5–8pm (last entry 7:30pm)
General admission only, first-come first-served — the Butterfly Center, Planetarium and Giant Screen Theatre are still ticketed. The museum publishes blackout dates; Sept 29 and Oct 13 are both off.
- Houston Zoo — first tuesday of every month, open to close
Free Zoo Days, presented by ExxonMobil. Online reservation required, none sold at the gate, and they sell out — October 6 was already gone when we checked.
Thursday
- Museum of Fine Arts, Houston — All open hours (11am–9pm)
Permanent collections only, courtesy of Shell USA. Special exhibitions still need a separate, discounted All Access ticket.
- Children's Museum Houston — 5–8pm (Free Family Night)
The museum stays open to 8pm on Thursdays specifically for this.
- Holocaust Museum Houston — 2–5pm
Free to everyone in that window; last entry is 4:30pm.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
- Active-duty US military and reserves with ID, and military families with dependent cards
- Texas Lone Star Card holders (TANF, SNAP, WIC) — free general admission for up to 6 people from the household
- Texas public library cardholders aged 18 or under, on Saturdays and Sundays
- Bank of America cardholders on the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday of the month (Museums on Us)
- Anyone visiting only the library, shop, restaurants or Glassell School
Houston Museum of Natural Science
- Members

- Museums for All: SNAP/EBT card plus photo ID buys up to four daytime tickets at $3 each
The pattern worth noticing: a Texas Lone Star Card, a public library card, a student ID or a Bank of America card each unlock free or near-free entry somewhere on this list, on days that have nothing to do with the published free windows.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Garages free for the first 30 minutes, then $10 for up to 4 hours ($6 members), $18 for 4–12 hours ($10 members).
Holocaust Museum Houston
Free for the first 30 minutes, then $8 for up to 4 hours, $12 for 4–12 hours.
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
Street parking is free.
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Parking is free on Thursdays and $6.50 per vehicle every other day.
Houston Botanic Garden
Free on-site parking, first-come, during normal operating hours.
A free Thursday at the MFAH still costs $10 to park in the garage. The Arboretum inverts it — admission is always free and Thursday is the day the parking is free.
Method
How this was checked, and how to cite it
Each venue's own admission or visit page was opened and read on September 11, 2026. Nothing here comes from an aggregator, a press release or an older version of our own site. Where a venue publishes flexible pricing that depends on the date chosen — the Houston Zoo does — no adult price is given, because there is no single correct one.
Checking it turned up four errors on pages we had already published, which is the honest argument for doing this at all: we had the Natural Science Museum's free window on the wrong day, the MFAH's Thursday without the special-exhibition caveat, the Holocaust Museum's window in the evening rather than the afternoon, and Miller's free covered-seat tickets released on the morning of the show rather than the day before. All four are now fixed.
