Downtown
Theater District, ballpark, and 7 miles of tunnels
Houston's downtown is compact and walkable by Texas standards: the Theater District (second only to NYC in seats), Daikin Park for the Astros, Discovery Green, and the underground tunnel system that keeps office workers cool in August. Stay here if you're in town for a game, a show, or a convention at GRB.

Museum District
19 museums in a 1.5-mile radius, many free
The Museum District is the reason to visit Houston that nobody outside Houston knows about. The MFAH, Natural Science, the Menil, Rothko Chapel, and the Children's Museum all sit within walking distance of Hermann Park and the zoo, and 11 of the 19 museums are always free.
Best for: museum days, families, rainy days
Montrose
Houston's bohemian heart
Tattoo parlors next to art galleries next to some of the best restaurants in the state. Montrose is where Houston keeps its weird: vintage shops on Westheimer, the Menil campus, dive bars, patios, and the city's LGBTQ+ history. Base yourself here to eat well.
Best for: food & drink, nightlife, vintage shopping
The Heights
Victorian porches, 19th Street, and brunch lines
A 1890s streetcar suburb turned Houston's most charming neighborhood. Antique shops and bakeries on 19th Street, the hike-and-bike trail on an old rail line, and a bar and restaurant scene that competes with Montrose. Family-friendly by day, lively by night.
Best for: brunch, strolling, boutiques
Midtown
Bars, patios, and the light rail
Between Downtown and the Museum District, Midtown is Houston's go-out neighborhood for the under-35 crowd. Dozens of bars on a walkable grid, Midtown Park, and easy rail access to the ballpark and museums.
Best for: nightlife, bachelor/ette weekends
EaDo
East Downtown: soccer, murals, and breweries
Warehouses turned into breweries, the Shell Energy Stadium for Dynamo and Dash matches, the city's densest concentration of murals, and 8th Wonder Brewery. EaDo is Houston's most rapidly changing neighborhood and a great pre-game base.
Best for: soccer, murals, craft beer
Rice Village & West U
Boutiques, patios, and Rice University
A 16-block shopping district beside Rice University's oak-lined campus. Come for the boutiques and restaurants, stay for the James Turrell Skyspace on campus at sunset (free, reservations recommended).
Best for: shopping, sunset at the Skyspace, Medical Center visitors
Galleria / Uptown
Texas's biggest mall and the Waterwall
Uptown is Houston's second downtown: the 400-store Galleria with its indoor ice rink, the 64-foot Waterwall, and more hotel rooms than anywhere else in the city. Convenient, polished, car-dependent.
Best for: shopping, business travel, hotel deals
Asiatown (Chinatown)
The best Asian food in the South, on Bellaire Blvd
Six miles of Bellaire Boulevard packed with Vietnamese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, and Malaysian restaurants, dim sum halls, bubble tea, and the massive Hong Kong City Mall. Go hungry and go with a group.
Best for: dim sum, pho, grocery adventures
Memorial & Energy Corridor
1,500-acre park and corporate campuses
West Houston's leafy, affluent side: Memorial Park (bigger than Central Park, with the new Land Bridge), the Houston Arboretum, and the Energy Corridor's hotel cluster. Best for runners, cyclists, and business travelers.
Best for: running, cycling, business travel
Clear Lake & Kemah
NASA, the Boardwalk, and the bay
Thirty minutes southeast: Space Center Houston, the Kemah Boardwalk's rides and waterfront restaurants, and sailing on Clear Lake. Easily a full day, and a natural stop on the way to Galveston.
Best for: NASA day, families, boardwalk
Galveston
The island, 50 minutes away
Houston's beach town: 32 miles of Gulf beaches, the Victorian Strand district, Moody Gardens' pyramids, Pleasure Pier, and the best Mardi Gras in Texas. Doable as a day trip, better as a night.
Best for: beach days, weekend escapes, cruise departures
