Midtown

Where it is. Midtown sits just southwest of Downtown, edged mostly by freeways, and covers about 725 acres by the Midtown Management District's count. The METRORail Red Line runs through it on Main Street with three stops, McGowen, Ensemble/HCC and Wheeler, and carries on to Downtown one way and to the Museum District, Hermann Park, the Medical Center and the Astrodome the other. METRO runs trains every 6 minutes on weekdays and every 12 at weekends.

Parks. Midtown Park, at 2811 Travis St, is the neighborhood's front lawn: a Great Lawn and pavilion, a dog park, a water feature for kids, bocce and a 16-foot mosaic mural by Dixie Friend Gay, open daily 8am to 10pm over a 400-space underground garage. Elizabeth Baldwin Park, at 1701 Elgin St, is the old one: a 4.8-acre city park established in 1905, with century-old oaks and its original fountain. Bagby Street, rebuilt in 2013 with wider sidewalks and shorter crossings, was the first Greenroads-certified street in Texas.

Theater. The Ensemble Theatre, founded in 1976 and at 3535 Main St since 1985, calls itself the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest. MATCH, the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston at 3400 Main St, has staged shows since October 2015 in four theaters and a gallery shared by the city's small and mid-sized companies.

Food and drink. A Vietnamese community took root here in the 1970s and 80s. Very few of its street signs remain, but Mai's on Milam has been serving since 1978. After dark the draw is bars and clubs within walking distance of each other. For a slower evening, Axelrad at 1517 Alabama St has hammocks and shares its patio with Luigi's Pizzeria.

Parking. When we checked in October 2026, the Midtown Park garage was free for the first 30 minutes and a $10 flat rate on weekday evenings after 6pm and at weekends; check the rate before you rely on it.
