Houston Date Night Ideas by Budget: Free, $50, $150, and Blowout

A Skyspace at sunset, a bat colony, an underground cistern, and the best cocktail bar in Texas. Date nights that don't start with 'dinner and a movie.'

Updated September 8, 2026 · By the Experiencing Houston team

Houston is an underrated date city because it doesn't try to be one. The best nights here are a little strange: a light installation in a grass pyramid, a quarter-million bats, a room of Rothkos. Sorted by what you want to spend.

Free

  • Sunset at the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace. Reserve two free spots, arrive 15 minutes early, sit through 40 minutes of the sky changing color. Then walk into Rice Village for a drink.
  • Bats at Waugh Bridge. Around dusk, 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats pour out from under the bridge at Buffalo Bayou Park. Walk the trail to the skyline viewpoint afterward.
  • The Waterwall at night, lit, with the mist cooling the air. Corny and effective.
  • Miller Outdoor Theatre on the hill with a blanket and a bottle. Free symphony or ballet under the stars, March to November.
  • Skylawn at POST for the skyline, then the food hall if you're hungry.

About $50

  • The Cistern tour ($10 each) followed by drinks at one of the bars along the bayou.
  • Axelrad: a hammock, two beers, and a pizza from next door.
  • Tacos at Ninfa's, then the murals in EaDo on foot. Reserve →.
  • The MFAH on a Thursday (free) and dinner in Montrose after.

About $150

  • Sunset kayak on Buffalo Bayou. Guided paddles under the skyline at golden hour; the bat-colony paddle is the one to book. Book a sunset paddle →.
  • A Houston food tour through Montrose or the Heights: six tastings, three hours, no decisions to make. Book a food tour →.
  • Dinner at the bar at Anvil, dealer's choice, then a walk down Westheimer.
  • An Astros night game at Daikin Park with roof-closed air conditioning and a downtown drink after. Astros tickets →.
