Layover at IAH: What You Can Actually Do in 4, 6, or 8 Hours
Houston Bush Airport is 25 minutes from things worth leaving for. An honest breakdown by layover length, with return-time math.

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is 22 miles north of downtown Houston. With no traffic that's 25 minutes; at rush hour it's 50. Here is what's honestly doable, with the math that keeps you from missing your connection.
The rule
Subtract 2.5 hours from your layover for the round trip and re-clearing security (TSA PreCheck: subtract 2). Whatever is left is your Houston time. Under 4 hours total: stay in the terminal. Under 3.5 hours with an international connection: definitely stay.
4-hour layover (about 90 minutes in the city)
Pick one thing near the freeway.
- Truth BBQ in the Heights is 25 minutes down I-45 and one of the best barbecue spots in Texas. Go outside the lunch rush; the line moves.
- POST Houston downtown: a food hall and a rooftop skyline park, 20 minutes, right off I-45. Eat, ride the escalators to Skylawn, leave.
6-hour layover (about 3.5 hours in the city)
- Downtown loop: Buffalo Bayou Park for the skyline walk, then the Cistern tour (book the time slot before you leave the airport), then lunch at POST.
- Museum District: the Menil and Rothko Chapel, both free, then a taco lunch in Montrose. 35 minutes each way.

8+ hour layover (about 5.5 hours in the city)
- Space Center Houston: it's 45 to 60 minutes from IAH on the far side of the city, and the tram tour alone takes 90 minutes. Doable with 8 hours and a rideshare both ways, tight with less. Book the tram tour for a specific time before you commit. Book timed tickets →.
- Museum District proper: the Natural Science museum plus the MFAH and lunch.
Getting into town
- Rideshare/taxi: $35 to $55 each way to downtown. The fastest option.
- METRO 102 bus: cheap, about an hour to downtown. Only for very long layovers.
- Rental car: only worth it if you're going to Space Center.
Overnight layover
Stay downtown, not by the airport. Downtown has walkable food and the morning drive back is against traffic. Downtown hotels →. If you're stuck near the airport, the Greenspoint hotel cluster is 10 minutes away.
Luggage
There is no public luggage storage at IAH. Use a luggage-storage app to book a nearby hotel or shop, or travel carry-on only for a city trip.
Stay in the terminal instead?
IAH's Terminal A to E connection (the Skyway) is slow; allow 20 minutes between distant terminals. Best food is in Terminal C and E. The United Club and the Centurion Lounge (Terminal D) are the lounges worth a day pass.
