What they actually say
- The Strand/Mechanic Historic District is about 13 blocks of Galveston's 1850s to early-1900s commercial core, and The Strand itself runs from 20th to 25th Street. The Victorian buildings now hold shops, restaurants, offices and apartments.
- Street parking downtown is paid, not free: $2.25 an hour with a one-hour minimum, enforced every day from 9am to 6pm, Sunday included. The paid zone runs 20th to 25th Street between Harborside Drive and Church Street.
- Pay at one of 17 pay stations or with the PayByPhone app. The stations take the exact amount only and give no change or refunds.
- The rail trolley and the Seawall trolley run Friday to Sunday only: hourly until noon, every half hour until 6pm, then hourly until 8pm. Island Transit fares are $1 for adults, free for children under 6 with an adult, $5 for a day ticket.
- Dickens on The Strand, the Galveston Historical Foundation's Victorian street festival, takes over the district the first weekend of December; the 2026 dates are December 4 to 6. The grounds are gated with paid admission on Saturday and Sunday, and parking is paid street parking around the grounds plus the garages at 21st and Market and at 25th and Harborside.
