Juneteenth at Emancipation Park

Of all the Juneteenth events in the country, this is the one with the strongest claim to the original. Emancipation Park exists because formerly enslaved Houstonians pooled money and bought the land in 1872 for the express purpose of holding Juneteenth celebrations, at a time when they were barred from other public parks. The holiday has been marked on this ground for more than 150 years.

That history is the reason to come here rather than to a larger festival elsewhere in the city. It is a neighbourhood park in the Third Ward, the programming is community-run, and it is free.

Houston in mid-June is brutal by mid-afternoon, so the morning and the evening are the comfortable halves of the day. The park has mature trees and a community centre, which is more shade than most outdoor events in this city offer.

Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, so expect the day itself to be busy across Houston and the surrounding programme to run beyond the park. Details post closer to the date.
